Our Data Sources

At CurrentUVIndex.com we prioritize accuracy and reliability in the data we present. We understand the importance of having the most current and comprehensive information about UV exposure to help you make informed decisions for your skin health and outdoor activities.

To ensure that our data is of the highest quality, we obtain data from reputable sources and carefully calibrate our metrics. Below are details regarding the main sources from which we obtain our data.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

One of our primary data sources is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is a scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere. NOAA plays a critical role in providing weather data, forecasts, and warnings for the protection of life and property.

From the NOAA, we source UV index forecasts and real-time data. NOAA's Satellite and Information Service Division operates various satellites and manages data collection from numerous observing systems. This data is invaluable in providing up-to-date information on the strength of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We utilize this data to deliver precise and timely UV index information for locations across the United States and around the world.

Our data from NOAA was last updated at 1:00 PM UTC on November 20, 2024.

SimpleMaps US Cities Data

To offer more localized and granular UV index information, we also incorporate data from SimpleMaps. SimpleMaps provides a free (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0) dataset of cities in the United States, which can be found here.

By using SimpleMaps' dataset, we are able to precisely pinpoint the geographical coordinates of thousands of cities across the United States. Combining this information with the UV data sourced from NOAA allows us to provide highly localized UV index forecasts and current readings. This enables our users to access UV index information specific to their city or any city they plan to visit.

US Census Bureau

Another valuable data source we use is the US Census Bureau. The Census Bureau is a principal agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System, responsible for producing data about the American people and economy. They provide essential demographic and geographic information.

We use the US Census Bureau data to prioritize cities with larger population in our search results to enhance our search relevance, making it easier and more intuitive for users to find UV index information for major population centers.

We are committed to continuously improving the quality of our data and services. As technology evolves and new data sources become available, we will continually assess and integrate these resources into our platform.
